Art, Sex and Candy
Sometimes we love her, sometimes we hate her. Sometimes we hate her so much that we love her. And doesn’t artist Wayne Moraghan know it… After the success of his first exhibition based on super songstress Dolly Parton entitled “Dolly Mixtures”, on July 1st he will revisit the lovely Ms Parton with his new exhibition “More Dolly Mixtures!”
The show will run until August 3rd at the flagship sweet shop Cybercandy in Covent Garden, where visitors can browse a vast selection of imported candies from the world over and pick up some of the finest treats on offer, while perusing the amusing, vibrant and quirky images on display. The Scotland-born London-based is known for producing what he calls “Art for fun, with no hidden agenda.” While the simplistic pop aspect of this exhibition brings to mind the quintessential works of Andy Warhol, aesthetically the art bares a resemblance to the comic strip-like works of pop art icon Roy Lichtenstein. Yet, like the diva herself, the fact the art oozes the ‘camp and kitsch’ ironically, it makes the exhibition all the more genuine. In fact, it’s all these qualities that Wayne believes make Parton a “true gay icon”.
“Dolly to me is like childhood, she is so fantastically over the top and free of inhibitions… she is like a cartoon come to life!”
Open 10am – 10pmfrom Monday to Saturday and Sunday 11am to 8pm and with free admission it’s a sweet deal. Visit www.waynedidit.com for more information on the exhibition and artist, or www.cybercandy.co.uk for details on the venue.
